What is Pastoral Counseling?
Pastoral Counseling is much like standard secular counseling in many ways. A treatment contract is drawn up between the therapist and the client. There are certain obligations that must be met and goals that are outlined in the first sessions.
Unlike secular counseling, the Bible is used to address many issues and help guide the client along life's path. Also, prayer and confession may play a large role in the pastoral counseling setting.
Pastoral Counselors may or may not be state licensed. Many Pastoral Counselors choose not to be state licensed but rather choose to be licensed through a national Christian Licensing Agency that shares their views of Pastoral Counseling and has tailored an educational program to that effect.
You do not need to be an active member of any certain church or religious organization in order to attend Pastoral Counseling. In fact you don't even have to attend church at all! Though to have a positive outcome, you do need to have faith in a Higher Power and a belief in the Bible.
